Thank you for visiting!
I’m Julie Yizhe Hu (she/they), an author-illustrator and educator with a specialty on sequential art and semi-realistic illustrations for young adult audiences. I hold a BA in Environmental Studies and Visual Arts from Bowdoin College, and a MFA in Design and Technology from Parsons School of Design, The New School.
Through visual storytelling, I combine a lush, imaginative, and sensual art style with an avid love of history, nature, and contemporary pop culture. As a third-culture Chinese creator, I have a strong interest in bringing historically rooted aesthetics, mythologies, and ways of understanding the world into contemporary global storytelling.
My recurring themes include the emotional landscape of young people navigating high-expectation environments, the intersections of science, magic, and belief systems, and the dynamics of beauty and power. As a teen culture advocate, my work often centers on third-culture adolescents shaped by academic pressure, cultural displacement, as well as conflicting expectations around identity, success, and self-determination.
When I’m not drawing, I enjoy reading, cooking, wearing Lolita fashion, binging drama, and visiting new shops and spots in the city.
